Karungali — black ebony, Diospyros ebenum — is the wood the Siddhars of the Tamil tradition chose above all others. Dense enough to sink in water, dark as the night sky, it is held sacred to Lord Shiva, to Kala Bhairava and to Goddess Kali. Where Tulasi is worn for grace, Karungali is worn for guard. It is the mala of the person who wants a shield.

These beads are cut from genuine karungali heartwood and hand-capped in 999 fine silver, every bead individually wire-wrapped and linked. The contrast is deliberate: the deepest black wood against bright fine silver, so the mala reads as strong rather than ornamental.

Traditional significance & benefits

  • Protection from negative energy: The wood most associated in Tamil tradition with warding off drishti, ill will and unseen harm
  • Sacred to Shiva and Bhairava: Worn during Shiva upasana, Bhairava sadhana and Kali worship, and on Amavasya and Pradosham
  • Steadies the mind: Believed to hold the nerves calm and strengthen resolve — traditionally worn by those undertaking long sadhana
  • Courage and willpower: Long associated with fearlessness, and with clearing obstacles that keep returning
  • Said to cool the body: In folk practice karungali is held to absorb heat and restlessness from the wearer

Specifications

  • Purity: 999 fine silver caps, links and wire
  • Beads: 54 genuine karungali (black ebony) heartwood beads, hand-turned
  • Finish: Hand wire-wrapped, flower-cap setting on every bead

Choose your size

  • 6 mm — 54 beads, 24 inches. The everyday mala: light, sits close, worn under clothing without being felt
  • 8 mm — 54 beads, 28 inches. The most asked-for size — visible, balanced, comfortable for long japa
  • 10 mm — 54 beads, 30 inches. The statement mala: heavier beads, deeper drape, favoured for daily puja and by those who want presence

Care

  • Remove before bathing, swimming and before applying oils or perfume
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth — never use chemical silver dip on wooden beads
  • A light rub of sesame or coconut oil once in a few months restores the deep black lustre
